Curriculum Vitae

I studied Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ghent and I did my thesis on the toxicological evaluation of the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol in pigs. In the sixth year of my study, I chose the option 'small animal medicine'. Although cats, dogs and all kinds of exotic animals were my favourite and most common patients, the interest for fish and related diseases started to grow. After graduating, I was really determined to find a job with aquatic animals. In february 2008, it became reality: I started a PhD in the lab for Ecotoxicology, Biochemistry and Toxicology at the University of Antwerp.
My research will focus on the mechanisms of anoxia-resistance in fish. Metabolomics of the main organs of the anoxia-resistant crucian carp (Carassius carassius L.) will be compared with metabolomic changes of the anoxia-intolerant common carp (Cyprinus carpio) using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as an analytical tool.
