I started to study Biology at the University of Ghent. When I passed for the candidate's degree I moved to the University of Antwerp because of my interest in the behaviour of large mammals. My thesis was about "the dominance hierarchy, in relation to grazing behaviour and parasite load of the American bison (Bison bison bison)". In 2007 I started to work on the European INTERREG project “BeNeKempen” at the EBT laboratory. During this project I studied the effects of metal pollution on the health and welfare of large grazers in nature reserves in order to create a guideline for nature workers. At the end of 2007 I successfully applied for IWT funding. I started my PhD “Health effects, bioaccumulation and detoxification of metals in large herbivores” on 1 January 2008. This PhD is also conducted at the EBT laboratory and my supervisor is Prof. Lieven Bervoets.
